We provide healthy meals to the children at Gamkakalandjies nursery in Beaufort West, to ensure they receive the correct nutrition to support their learning. These meals are the only balanced meals many of the children receive. Monthly donations which are received from UKUZWA supporters, and used to purchase the ingredients, as well as to offer a salary to a cook, make this possible.
BABIES AND TODDLERS
A number of women in the UK knit a range of colourful tops and hats for babies and toddlers. These are donated to UKUZWA and we then send it, along with other essential baby items, for example bottles, cups, sanitary ware, blankets, teethers and rattles, to the Karoo. These are then distributed across a range of hospitals and clinics according to need of local communities.
GAMKAKALANDJIES NURSERY, BEAUFORT WEST
UKUZWA provides ongoing support to Gamkakalandjies nursery to ensure the enhancement of the learning environment offered to the children. This included for example the purchase of a photocopier in 2017 and the purchase and installment of White Boards in the new classrooms, in 2018.
EDUCATIONAL GAMES AND TOYS
UKUZWA collects educational games and toys, which range from Lego, books, dolls, toy cars, stationary, board games, and many more, within the UK. These items are then sent to a central collection point at Vuurvliegies nursery in Beaufort West, from where it is distributed according to need to many different nurseries and child care environments.
UKUZWA works in partnership with the NG Church in Merweville, in supporting children at the local George Frededricks Primary School, who has the potential and desire to complete their schooling careers. As George Fredericks Primary School only offer education until end Year Nine, children normally do not complete their education due to financial reasons. Continuation of schooling include living and travel to neighbouring towns. We currently support Weldonesia Conradie who now attends Zwartberg High School and boarding school in Prince Albert.
The sending of Christmas Bags to around 500 children across Beaufort West, Merweville and Loxton, has been a highlight for all of us at UKUZWA for the past 7 years. Many supporters in the UK have filled the Christmas Bags every year with clothing, stationary, toiletries, toys and sweets, which were then shipped to South Africa and handed out to the children in need just before the December holidays. Unfortunately, due to changes within SA import legislation and especially the total ban on the sending of import of second hand clothes, this project had to be ended in early 2018.
